CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — Security personnel at South Africa’s Parliament discovered an unauthorised man inside the parliamentary precinct during the early hours of Friday, prompting his removal and handover to police.

Information released by Parliament indicates that the individual may have remained inside the premises overnight before Parliamentary Protection Services located him.

Officials subsequently transferred the man into police custody for further investigation into how he gained access to the restricted premises and the circumstances surrounding his presence inside the precinct.

Despite the breach, Parliament said its scheduled activities were able to continue without interruption.

Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said the institution regards unauthorised entry into its premises as a serious security matter. He indicated that Parliament continues to implement security measures aimed at protecting the institution and those operating within it.
