MNANGAGWA APPOINTS TAGWIREI MINISTER

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, with immediate effect.

The appointment was announced in a Zimbabwe Government press statement dated 8 October 2026, signed by Dr M. Rushwaya, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet.

According to the statement, Mnangagwa made the appointment in terms of Section 104(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“His Excellency the President, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has appointed Kudakwashe Tagwirei as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion.”

The statement says the appointment takes effect immediately.

TAGWIREI MOVES INTO GOVERNMENT

Tagwirei, a prominent Zimbabwean businessman, now moves from the private sector into a formal Cabinet role at a time when the Government is placing investment, economic development and capital mobilisation at the centre of its economic agenda.

His new portfolio gives him responsibility for an area directly linked to Zimbabwe's efforts to attract investment, promote economic development and position the country as an investment destination.

The appointment also places a businessman with extensive experience in Zimbabwe's corporate and investment environment inside the Government's economic policy-making structure.

WHAT DOES THE APPOINTMENT MEAN?

The immediate significance is that Tagwirei is no longer operating solely as a private-sector figure. He now holds a ministerial position with responsibility for economic development and investment promotion.

The appointment is therefore likely to attract considerable public and political attention, particularly because of Tagwirei's prominence in Zimbabwe's business environment and his longstanding visibility in national economic affairs.

The Government has not, in the press statement, provided further details explaining the circumstances surrounding the appointment or outlined specific priorities for Tagwirei in his new portfolio.

For now, the official position is clear: Kudakwashe Tagwirei is Zimbabwe's new Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, effective 8 October 2026.
