Renovation work at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo is moving forward, with the maternity wing among the areas already covered as Zimbabwe’s Government seeks to modernise major public referral hospitals.

A Special Advisory Monitoring and Evaluation delegation toured the hospital on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to assess progress. The visit was led by presidential adviser Joram Gumbo, who said the scale of the work reflected the age and condition of the hospital buildings. His comments were reported by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). (zbcnews.co.zw)

## Renovations and doctors’ accommodation

Mpilo is one of Zimbabwe’s major referral hospitals and serves patients from Bulawayo and the wider southern region. The current works are being carried out by Prevail and are presented by Government as part of a broader drive to improve public healthcare infrastructure.

Hospital chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said the completed work should improve patient care. His current leadership role is independently supported by reporting published in July 2026 and by a September 2026 report in *The Herald*. (cite.org.zw)

Another issue highlighted during the visit was the unfinished doctors’ quarters. *The Herald* reported on September 25 that the project had reached three of four planned floors and had stalled because of funding constraints. Presidential adviser Paul Tungwarara pledged to support completion and directed that the remaining work be finished within three months, according to the report. (heraldonline.co.zw)

## What is established — and what remains unclear

The verified development is that renovation work is under way, the maternity wing has been covered, officials inspected the site and support has been pledged for the doctors’ accommodation project.

The available reports do not state the total cost of the hospital upgrade, the full construction schedule, the overall percentage of work completed or whether services have been disrupted during the renovations. They also do not independently measure whether patient outcomes or waiting times have improved.

Government has linked the project to its wider modernisation agenda and Vision 2030\. The practical test will be whether the work is completed on schedule and whether patients and medical staff experience measurable improvements in facilities, working conditions and service delivery.

## What to watch next

- Progress on the remaining doctors’ accommodation works over the three-month period announced by Tungwarara.
- Further updates on renovation of hospital departments beyond the maternity wing.
- Disclosure of the project’s budget, completion timetable and implementation milestones.
- Evidence of changes in patient access, staff accommodation and healthcare delivery at Mpilo.
