**HARARE —** The death of businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, in a helicopter crash has produced sharply contrasting reactions in Zimbabwe, with tributes and condolences appearing alongside anger, criticism and, in some cases, open celebration of his death.

Chivayo, one of Zimbabwe’s most visible businessmen, died on Wednesday, September 30, alongside other occupants of the helicopter. President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed his death and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

## A FLOOD OF TRIBUTES

Mnangagwa described Chivayo and his family as philanthropic, saying their charitable activities had reached people across politics, religion, public service, culture, sport and other sectors.

The President said he had met Chivayo on Tuesday, one day before the crash, and that the businessman had shared plans involving disadvantaged communities and war veterans.

Musicians, religious figures, friends and business associates have also publicly mourned him.

Jah Prayzah described Chivayo as more than a friend, saying he was like family and a brother who had walked closely with him and his family through different chapters of their lives.

The musician and his wife, Rufaro Mukombe, subsequently postponed their wedding following the tragedy.

Dr Obey Mukanhairi also remembered Chivayo for his support of churches and assistance he provided when approached for help.

For those who knew Chivayo personally, the reaction has therefore been one of genuine grief over the loss of a friend, benefactor, husband and family member.

## BUT NOT EVERYONE IS MOURNING

Away from the official condolences and personal tributes, social media has revealed another side of the national reaction.

Some Zimbabweans have openly celebrated Chivayo’s death or expressed little sympathy for him.

Contemporary reporting by AP described the public response as mixed, with some people mourning him as a philanthropist while others expressed resentment over his wealth, lifestyle and political connections.

Zimbabwean media has also documented social-media reactions ranging from grief and prayer to scepticism, political commentary and celebration.

The reaction has been sufficiently striking that even those who have criticised Chivayo’s public conduct have debated whether celebrating someone’s death crosses a different line.

## THE 2030 QUESTION

Politics is an important part of understanding some of the anger surrounding Chivayo.

He was one of the most visible private supporters of Mnangagwa’s 2030 agenda.

In July, footage circulated of Chivayo celebrating the extension of Mnangagwa’s tenure aboard a private jet, generating significant online criticism. His support for the President’s continued tenure had become a source of controversy.

That political association means some people opposed to the 2030 project have interpreted his death through a political lens.

However, it would be inaccurate to suggest that everyone opposed to 2030 is celebrating his death, just as it would be inaccurate to suggest that everyone who supported Chivayo’s political position is mourning him.

The reactions are more complicated than that.

## WHY DID CHIVAYO PROVOKE SUCH STRONG REACTIONS?

Part of the answer lies in the unusual visibility of his wealth.

Chivayo regularly displayed luxury vehicles, expensive gifts, charitable donations and relationships with prominent political, religious, sporting and entertainment figures.

Supporters saw this as generosity and philanthropy.

Critics saw a different picture: conspicuous wealth in a country experiencing significant economic hardship, combined with close relationships with political leaders and controversies surrounding some of his business dealings.

His public persona therefore generated both admiration and resentment while he was alive.

His death has simply brought those opposing interpretations into sharper focus.

## CRITICISM OF A PUBLIC FIGURE IS NOT THE SAME AS CELEBRATING DEATH

There is an important distinction in the current debate.

People have the right to question a public figure’s business activities, political associations, wealth or public statements.

Those questions do not disappear because the individual has died.

At the same time, criticism of a person’s public record is different from celebrating the death of that person and other occupants of an aircraft.

The helicopter carried more than Chivayo and his wife. Other people also died.

Their families are grieving regardless of the public arguments surrounding Chivayo.

## THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY

There is also a danger in reducing Chivayo’s life entirely to his political connections.

Those who benefited from his philanthropy have their own experiences of the businessman.

Religious organisations, musicians, sporting figures and individuals who received assistance from him have publicly acknowledged that support.

Mnangagwa’s condolence message also pointed to projects Chivayo was reportedly pursuing for disadvantaged communities and war veterans shortly before his death.

Those claims come from the President and should be understood as such rather than independently established achievements.

That part of the story should not be erased simply because Chivayo was controversial.

## THE QUESTIONS THAT WILL REMAIN

Chivayo’s death does not automatically settle the controversies that surrounded his life.

Questions about his business dealings, state contracts, political relationships and philanthropy will continue to exist independently of the crash.

Likewise, the circumstances of the helicopter accident require an evidence-based investigation.

The cause has not yet been established, and investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Speculation should therefore not be presented as fact.

## AFRICA & BEYOND PERSPECTIVE

Wicknell Chivayo’s death has exposed something uncomfortable about Zimbabwean society.

There is grief.

There is admiration.

There is anger.

There is political resentment.

There is criticism of wealth and privilege.

And there is also open celebration of a death.

All of those reactions are now part of the public conversation, but they should not be confused with established facts.

Chivayo was a controversial and highly visible businessman whose life touched politics, religion, entertainment, sport and business.

His supporters will remember his generosity.

His critics will continue to question the circumstances surrounding his wealth and political associations.

And for the families of those who died, the immediate reality is neither politics nor social-media arguments.

It is loss.

The investigation into the crash should establish what happened. The debate about Chivayo’s life and legacy can continue — but it should be grounded in evidence rather than either glorification or speculation.
