# 21 Killed in Horror N1 Crash Between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka

**At least 21 people have died following a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the N1 highway in South Africa's Western Cape.**

A major road crash between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, with several others seriously injured.

The collision happened at around 11:30pm on Sunday night on the N1 highway, according to provincial authorities.

Two Toyota minibus taxis were involved in a head-on collision before a Suzuki SUV crashed into the wreckage.

Emergency services responded to the scene, where 18 people were initially declared dead. Three more victims later died after being taken to hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to 21.

Four other people suffered serious injuries and were taken for medical treatment.

The N1 was closed in both directions while emergency workers, traffic officials and investigators dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

Police have opened a culpable homicide investigation. Authorities have not yet established what caused the collision, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation said the death toll could still change as authorities continue assessing the scene.

The crash occurred during a particularly deadly weekend on South African roads. A separate collision near Ermelo in Mpumalanga claimed eight lives, taking the reported weekend road death toll to at least 29.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the N1 crash and have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the country's roads.
